Immediate Dentures

An Immediate denture is a full or partial denture which is fabricated prior to extraction of natural teeth and inserted by your dentist immediately after you teeth are removed.

The advantage of this is that you don’t have any time without teeth and the denture can duplicate the appearance of your natural teeth (if you want it to). Also by inserting the denture immediately, it will assist in reducing the bleeding following extractions.

The disadvantage of this is that the denture won’t fit as accurately as a denture made after the mouth has healed. Due to this the denture will require a reline approximately 3 months after initial insertion. A reline is NOT included in the initial cost of the denture.

An immediate denture is a temporary denture that is inserted immediately after extraction of your remaining teeth. The fit, appearance or comfort of such dentures can be difficult to predict. There is no way that the denture can be tried in to show you what your denture will look like when it’s finished,  or how they will fit or function.

After teeth are extracted, the gums change shape due to resorption of the bone. This may result in a space under the denture where your natural teeth were and your dentures may feel a bit loose for the first 3 months after extraction, whilst healing is taking place.

Immediate dentures often require a tissue conditioning or temporary liner during the healing phase prior to a permanent reline which refits the inner surface of the denture to the new shape of your mouth.

The procedure for immediate denture fabrication is as follows:

* Visit your denture clinic for initial impressions and all necessary appointments to fabricate the dentures. This will vary with each person according to how many teeth you still have and how many are to be extracted.

*You will be advised the completion date of your new dentures. You can then book your extraction appointment with your dentist for after the completion date

* You will pick up your dentures from the denture clinic and finalise your bill before your extraction appointment

*Take the new dentures along to you extraction appointment and your dentist will insert the dentures immediately after the teeth are removed.

A follow up appointment will be made at the denture clinic 4-5 days after your extractions to do any necessary adjustments.
